A particle filter can reduce your car’s pollution by filtering out the harmful exhaust gases. If your car is equipped with a particle filter. If you find that the car suddenly starts to slow down or run shorter per litre, this is a sign that the particle filter needs to be either cleaned or replaced. In the end, the diesel particle filter or DPF lamp will light up.

Particle filter replacement or cleaning?

In some cases, you can clean your particle filter yourself by adding the diesel particle filter cleaner into the tank. However, this does not apply to all cars, and some diesel cars have a filter that cannot be cleaned with particulate filter liquid. In these cases, it must be cleaned in a workshop.

There are many benefits to cleaning a particle filter and this can significantly extend the lifetime of the filter. In addition, it is also much cheaper than having to replace a filter completely.

However, you may be at risk that filter replacement is the only option – and in addition, there are also diesel cars that are not equipped with a particle filter at all.

Extra charge on diesel cars without particle filter

A diesel car generally pollutes more than a gasoline car, and it pollutes a lot, especially if it does not have a particle filter. Therefore, it has been decided that all diesel cars in for instance Denmark will be taxed an extra 150 Euros a year if it does not have the important particle filter.

The extra charge applies to all Danish cars, and it does not matter if it is a passenger car or a lorry van.

Particle filter on new cars

The European Commission has set European emission standards called Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6, which apply to all light vehicles including passenger cars. It is the Euro 5, which came into force in 2011 and which made it mandatory to have particle filters.

Euro emission standards have been developed by the European Commission with the aim of reducing pollution from motor vehicles. All over Europe, the larger cities are using these standards to keep old, heavily polluting cars out of cities. It’s easy to find these low emission zones with a simple Google search or on the European Commission’s website.

Is it worth buying particle filters?

You should expect a cost between 750 and 1500 Euros to have a replacement filter fitted. This price depends on the car model, but you can save money by, for example, choosing a used particle filter.

The cost of retrofitting a particle filter means that the filter is usually paid off within 5-10 years, so it is a good investment if you want to keep your car for many years. At the same time, it’s also worth remembering that you help protect the environment by driving a car with particle filter.

Gasoline cars also get particulate filters

Particle filters have been for diesel cars only for many years, but since 2017 it has become a requirement that direct-injection gasoline cars must be equipped with a filter that helps reduce pollution from ultra-fine particles. However, this law includes only all newly registered cars, and older cars are not affected by the law.

A direct injection gasoline car can run longer on the litre, but in turn it also increases the car’s pollution of the surroundings.
